Statement by Alkrty, Human Rights Activist, on the Escalating Violence in Abu Qumra, North Darfur

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) announced on Wednesday their full control over the town of Abu Qumra, located in the Kornoi locality, approximately 200 kilometers northwest of El Fasher, North Darfur. This development came only hours after the Sudan Liberation Movement, led by Minni Arko Minnawi, declared that a group of Tahir Hajar’s forces stationed in the same town had joined its ranks.

Verified footage obtained by Darfur24 shows RSF fighters celebrating their capture of the town, located roughly 150 kilometers southeast of the Tine border crossing between Sudan and Chad. In the video, an RSF commander calls on residents to return and reopen their shops, claiming that “no one will harm civilians.”

As a human rights advocate, I, Alkrty, strongly condemn any military operations or show of armed power in areas inhabited by civilians. We know with certainty that the malicious intelligence apparatus of General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the so-called Joint Forces are deliberately working to drag the region of Abu Qumra into a full-scale ethnic civil war.

Why do some armed factions insist on turning villages and small towns into military zones — exposing the entire population to collective destruction? This is precisely what we are witnessing today in El Fasher, and now, tragically, the same scenario is unfolding in Abu Qumra.

The so-called “Establishment Government” claims that it is targeting forces present in areas belonging to the Zaghawa community. Such actions are nothing less than a calculated attempt to destroy these communities completely. The attack on Abu Qumra is particularly dangerous, as it represents a targeted assault against the Zaghawa people — a form of identity-based violence that amounts to ethnic persecution and crimes against humanity.

The situation is extremely grave. We urgently call upon both warring parties to refrain from escalating this senseless conflict and to ensure the protection of civilians. The international community — especially the United Nations, African Union, and regional partners — must act swiftly to prevent Abu Qumra and surrounding areas from descending into yet another chapter of Sudan’s tragic cycle of ethnic cleansing and collective punishment.

Sudan is bleeding from within. The people of Darfur, Kordofan, the Blue Nile, and the Nuba Mountains continue to die at the hands of forces dominated by elites from the Nile River, Northern, and Gezira regions — forces that claim legitimacy while perpetuating a legacy of racial supremacy and impunity.

It is time for the world to recognize that silence in the face of ethnic targeting is complicity.
We demand the immediate withdrawal of all armed forces from civilian areas, the establishment of independent investigations into crimes committed in Abu Qumra, and the activation of international mechanisms for accountability and justice.

Only by confronting these atrocities head-on can Sudan begin to heal from decades of racialized violence, impunity, and marginalization.
