Rising Antisemitism in Australia: A Human Rights Condemnation

By Alkrty – Human Rights Activist and Legal Advocate

Australia is witnessing a deeply troubling resurgence of antisemitism, particularly since October 2023, following the Hamas attack on Israel. While political tensions abroad may fuel passionate debate, there is no justification—legal, moral, or humanitarian—for the hate crimes now targeting Jewish communities across our cities.

Recent Incidents: A Disturbing Escalation

The rise in antisemitic violence is not abstract. It is real, targeted, and terrifying:

  • Vandalism and Arson: A childcare centre in Sydney was deliberately set ablaze after being defaced with antisemitic graffiti. This was not an isolated act—it was one of several attacks in the area.

  • Graffiti and Threats: Nazi symbols and violent threats have appeared on cars, homes, and public buildings, reviving the iconography of genocide in our own streets.

  • Firebombing of Synagogues: Places of worship have been attacked, violating not only the safety of Jewish Australians but the sanctity of religious freedom itself.

These are not protests. These are hate crimes. And they must be condemned unequivocally.

Government and Community Response

In response, some steps have been taken:

  • Strike Force Pearl was launched by NSW Police to investigate these crimes, resulting in arrests.

  • Legislative Reform is being considered to strengthen hate speech laws and protect vulnerable communities.

  • Universities have adopted clearer definitions of antisemitism to safeguard Jewish students and staff.

These measures are welcome—but they must be matched by a broader cultural reckoning.

Community Voices: Fear and Urgency

Jewish Australians are voicing their fear, and rightly so. The antisemitism envoy has called for urgent action. As a human rights advocate, I stand with them. Safety is not negotiable. Dignity is not optional. And silence is complicity.

Historical Roots of Antisemitism in Australia

Antisemitism is not new to Australia. Though Jews arrived with the First Fleet and contributed to public life—including the election of a Jewish legislator in 1848—prejudice soon followed.

  • 1880s–1930s: Nationalist and unionist movements stoked fears of Jewish immigration. Media outlets like The Bulletin and Truth published grotesque caricatures and slurs.

  • 1938–1954: Holocaust survivors arriving in Australia were met with hostility. Immigration quotas and discriminatory policies ensured Jews remained a tiny minority.

  • Post-War Far-Right Movements: Figures like Eric Butler and groups like the Australian League of Rights spread antisemitic propaganda, including the fraudulent Protocols of the Elders of Zion.

  • Imported Fascism: Eastern European fascists migrated post-war and revived antisemitic ideologies on Australian soil.

These historical facts are not merely academic—they are warnings. Antisemitism has always adapted to new political climates. Today’s resurgence is part of that continuum.

Anti-Zionism and Soviet Influence

From the 1960s onward, Soviet propaganda blurred the line between anti-Zionism and antisemitism. University campuses became battlegrounds for ideological warfare, often targeting Jewish students under the guise of political critique.

Let us be clear: criticism of Israeli policy is legitimate. But when that criticism morphs into threats, vandalism, and exclusion of Jewish voices, it ceases to be political and becomes persecution.

My Position: No Excuse for Hate

As a human rights advocate, I reject all forms of racial, religious, and cultural hatred. The recent wave of antisemitic violence in Australia is not a protest—it is a violation of human dignity and democratic values.

I call on:

  • Lawmakers to enact robust protections against hate crimes.

  • Educators to teach the history and consequences of antisemitism.

  • Community leaders to speak out, not just when it is convenient, but when it is necessary.

Australia must not become a safe haven for hate. We must be a sanctuary for justice.
