Welcoming U.S. Sanctions on Sudan for the Use of Chemical Weapons
May 23, 2025
We, at Alkrty & The Center for Truth and Knowledge, wholeheartedly welcome and support the announcement made by the United States on April 24, 2025, under the Chemical and Biological Weapons Control and Warfare Elimination Act of 1991, formally determining that the Government of Sudan used chemical weapons in 2024.
This decisive action by the U.S. government sends a powerful message to perpetrators of atrocity crimes and those who flout international norms. The imposition of sanctions—including restrictions on U.S. exports to Sudan and limitations on Sudan’s access to U.S. credit lines—is a necessary and just step toward accountability, justice, and the protection of innocent civilians.
The Sudanese regime's use of chemical weapons constitutes a grave violation of international law and a flagrant breach of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), to which Sudan is a party. These atrocities have contributed to the suffering of countless Sudanese civilians, particularly in regions already ravaged by conflict, such as Darfur, the Nuba Mountains, and Blue Nile.
We call on all members of the international community to follow suit and adopt firm, coordinated measures to pressure the Sudanese authorities to halt their use of prohibited weapons, and to hold all those responsible fully accountable—politically, legally, and morally.
The Center remains steadfast in its mission to uncover truth, uphold justice, and amplify the voices of victims who have been silenced or ignored. These sanctions are a step toward restoring international order and affirming that impunity for crimes against humanity will no longer be tolerated.
