1-      The Department of Economic and Social Affairs- DESA

The mission of the Department of Economic and Social Affair, is to promote development for all. DESA’s work is far-reaching covering such issues as poverty reduction, population, gender equality and indigenous rights, macroeconomic policy, development finance, public sector innovation forest policy, climate change and sustainable development. To this end, DESA:

Ø Analyzes, generates, and compiles a wide range of data and information on development issues.

Ø Bring together the international community at conferences and summits to address economic and social challenges.

Ø Supports the formulation of development polices, global standards and norms.

Ø Monitors and supports the implementation of international agreements

Ø Assists states in meeting their development challenges through a variety of capacity development initiatives

In carrying its work, the Organization engages with a variety of stakeholders around the world.

2-      The Department of Filed Support- DFS

The Department of Field Support deals with matters of finance, logistics, information and communication technology, and human resources and general administration to help missions promote peace and security.

3-      The Department for General Assembly and Conference Management – DGACM

The Department for General Assembly and Conference Management, provides technical and secretariat support services to the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council and their Committees and other subsidiary bodies, as well as to conferences held away from United Nations Headquarters.

4-      The Department of Management – DM

The Department of Management provides strategic policy guidance and support to all entities of the Secretariat in three management areas: finance, human resources, and support services.

5-      The Department of Political Affairs – OPA

The Department of Political, plays a central role in the efforts of the United Nations to prevent and resolve conflict around the world and consolidate peace in the aftermath of war. To that end, DPA:

Monitors, identify potential armed conflict, recommendations, assistance and advises and support Security General in carrying out to prevent armed conflict around the world.

6-      The Department of Public Information – DPI

The Department of Public Information raises global awareness of the activities and concerns of the United Nations and promotes understanding of tis work.

7-      The Department of Peacekeeping Operations – DPKO

the Department of Peacekeeping Operations is responsible for assisting member states and the Secretary General in their efforts to maintain, achieve and sustain international peace and security.

8-      The Department of Safety and Security – SSS

The Department of Safety and Security, provides leadership, operational support, and oversight of security management system for the United Nations, ensuring the maximum security for staff and their dependents as well as enabling the staff and most efficient conduct of its programmed and activities through the world.

9-      The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs – OCHA

The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs mobilizes and coordinates humanitarians’ action in partnership with national and international actors to alleviate human suffering in disasters and emergencies.

10-  The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights – OHCHR

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights is the Official with principal responsibility for the United Nations rights activities and is charged with promoting and protecting civil, cultural, economic, political, and social rights for all.

11-  The Office of Internal Oversight Service – OIOS

The Office of Internal Oversights Services, provides independent, professional, and timely internal audit, monitoring, inspection, evaluation and investigating service.

12-  The Office of Legal Affairs – OLA

The Office of Legal Affairs is the central legal service of the Organization. It also contributes to the progressive development and codification of international public trade and law.

13-  The Office if the Special Adviser on Africa – OSAA

The Office of the Special Adviser on Africa was established in 2003, is enhancing international support for African, development and improving coherence and coordination of the United Nations system supporting Africa.

14-  The Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General – For Child and Armed Conflict – SRSG-CAAC,

The Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General – For Child and Armed Conflict – SRSG-CAAC, is promotes and protects the rights if all children affected by armed conflict worldwide.

15-  The Office if the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries – Landlocked – Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States – UN-OHRLLS

The Office if the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries – Landlocked – Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States – UN-OHRLLS, was established by the General Assembly in 2001 to help mobilizes international support for implementation of the Brussels Declaration and programmed of action for the least developed Countries.

16-  The Office for Disarmament Affairs – UNODA

The Office for Disarmament Affairs is part of the Secretary General, effort to bring new momentum into the United Nations disbarment agenda, the office for works toward nuclear disbarment and no-proliferation along with the strengthening of disarmament regimes with respect to other weapons of mass destruction including chemical and biological weapons.

The United Nations System:

The United Nations system consists of the United Nations family of organizations. It includes the Secretariate the United Nations fund and programmers, the specialized agencies, and other related organizations. The funds offices and programmers are subsidiary bodies of the General Assembly. The specialized agencies are linked to the United Nations through individual agreements and report to the Economic and social Council. The related organizations including IAEA and the World Trade Organizations, address area activity and have their own legislative bodies and budgets. Together, the family members of the United Nations system address all areas of cultural, economic, scientific, and social endeavor.

Is the United Nations system highest coordinating mechanism. Chaired by the Secretary General, its member are the leaders of the main parts of the United Nations system.

The United Nations Development Programmed leads the UNs global development network. With activities in more than 160 countries.

7-      The United Nations Volunteers -UNV

The United Nations Volunteers Programmed is the volunteer arm of the United Nations system, supporting peace, relief and development initiatives worldwide.

8-      The United Nations Capital Development Fund -UNCDF

The United Nations Capital Development Fund is the United Nations’ capital investment agency for the least developed countries.

9-      The United Nations Environment Programmer -UNEP

Founded in 1972, the United Nations Environment Programmed provides leadership and encourages partnership in caring for the environment and enabling nations and people to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations.

10-  The United Nations Population Fund -UNFPA

Established in 1976 at the initiative of the General Assembly, the United Nations Population Fund, is the largest internationally funded source of population assistance to developing countries and those with economics in transitions.

11-  The United Nations Human Settlements Programmed -UN-HABTAT

The United Nations Human Settlement Programmed, established in 1978, promotes sustainable human settlements development through advocacy, policy formulation, capacity building, knowledge creation and the strengthening of partnerships between government and civil society.JNNBBB

12-  The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees -UNHCR

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, set up in 1951 to help more than 1 million people still uprooted after the Second World War.

Specialized Agencies and Related Organization within the United Nations

1-      The International Labor Organization – ILO

The International Labor Organization promotes social justice and human and labor rights. Established in 1919, it become the first specialized agency of the United Nations in 1946.

2-      Food and Agriculture organization of the United Nations – FAO

The food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations is the lead agency for agriculture, forestry, fisheries and rural development in the United Nations system.

3-      United Nations Educational, scientific and Cultural Organization – UNESCO

Created in 1946, UNESCO works to create the conditions for dialogue among civilizations, cultures and people , based upon respect for commonly shared values and geared towards sustainable development, a culture of peace, observance of human rights and the alleviation of poverty.

4-      World Health Organization WHO

Established in 1948, the World Health Organization is the directing and coordinating authority within the United Nations system for health.

5-      World Bank Group

The world bank group consists of five institutions as follows:

Ø The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development – IBRD, founded in 1944

Ø The International Development Association – IDA, 1960

Ø The Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency – MIGA, 1988

Ø The International Center for Settlement of Investment Disputes – ICSID, 1966

6-      The International Monetary Fund – IMF

Established at the Bretton Conference in 1944, the International Monetary Fund facilitates International monetary cooperation, promotes exchange rate stability and order exchange arrangement, assists in the establishment of a multilateral system of payments and the elimination of foreign exchange restrictions and assists member by temporarily providing financial resources to correct maladjustment in their balance of payment.

The International Telecommunication Union – ITU, coordinates global telecommunication networks and services for government and the private sector.

10-  Universal Postal Union – UPU

Comprising 191 member states, the Universal Postal Union – UPU, regulates international postal service , established in 1874.

11-  World Meteorological Organization – WMO

The World Meteorological Organization – WMO, is a United Nations specialized agency since 1951, provides authoritative scientific information on the state and behavior of the earth atmospheres, its interaction with the oceans, the climate it produces and the resulting distribution of water resources and related environmental issues.

12-  World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO

The World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO, was established in 1970 and become a United Nations specialized agency in 1974.

13-  International Fund for Agricultural Development – IFAD

Established in 1977, the International Fund for Agricultural Development – IFAD, is dedicated to eradicating poverty in the rural areas of developing countries around the world.

14-  United Nations Industrial Development Organizations – UNIDO

The mandate of the United Nations Industrial Development Organizations – UNIDO, is to promote industrial development and cooperation.

15-  World Tourism Organization – UNWTO

The 1World Tourism Organization – UNWTO, is the leading international organization responsible for promoting the development of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism.

16-  Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organizations – CTBTO

18-  Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons – OPCW

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons – OPCW, is an independent international organization in close working relationship with the United Nations.

19-  World Trade Organizations – WTO

The World Trade Organizations – WTO, replaced the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade – IGATT, in 1995 as the only international organization dealing with multilateral rules governing trade between nations around the world.
